Talybont Turbine
Our village's own green power station
History
Talybont Reservoir was built in the 1930s to supply water to Newport. The dam collects water from the River Caerfanell and its tributaries. The Turbine House was originally built to provide power for the treatment works, but it fell out of use when the national grid reached the valley.
Present Day
The new 36kW Valley Hydro crossflow turbine uses the existing turbine house and pipework which was installed when the dam was originally built in the 1930's to provide water for Newport.
Electricity generated is sold to a Public Electrictiy Supplier (currently Good Energy) through the National Grid.
The manually controlled single vane crossflow turbine was manufactured in Cornwall by Valley Hydro.
It operates on an average head of 23.8 metres with a flow range of 115 to 230 litres a second.
It drives an Amco Marelli three phase 400 volt 8 pole induction generator through abeit and pulley system. The plant is fully automated with and Allan Bradley SLC programmable logic controller.
Anticipated output is 240,000 kW hours a year - this is enough energy to power approximately 70 average homes for 1 year.
